Of the 80 vendors that claim XPDL support, I would estimate that only around 12 have any real substantial implementation. Unisys had some strong advocates, but never got a product. I also have seen some products which support XPDL, but the marketing and sales people are completely unaware of it, and simiarly does not get on the web site.
Of the real products that use it:
Fujitsu uses this as the internal and external format for storing processes. Fujitsu support was certified.
ITPCommerce has a Visio based modeling tool which reads and writes XPDL, and it is certified.
eClarus has a web based modeling tool that reads and writes XPDL, it is certified.
Tibco uses XPDL as the internal and external format. For example, the Studio process modeler writes XPDL which the engine consumes.
BizAgi is a modeling tool that writes XPDL.
What is not clear is WHAT you desire to use XPDL for.
I would like to know if there's any real application based on XPDL in buzzworld out of vendor scenario. What's the truely usability in the real world ? Is there any company using the XPDL for interchange process or it for a simple internal workflow process ? Sincerely, i see many discussion about BPEL and XPDL implementation but it seems me only theorical final opinions.
I have worked with workflow applications for sometime in my career and have followed the WFMC steps since. Now i'm trying developing an application based on it using the Open Busines Engine (OBE) package. I think that implement it is not a task for a common user like a process analyst not experimented in IT technology and development area. There's a couple of complexity in it use, because itsn't talk about modelling process using a simple editor like JPED or Together - there's many technical work evolved in it - Java, XML and some patience too.
The question is, why i would use a so complexy model in my applications in my company ? Let's think in learning curve to start it running and what about the development time and costs to start running it?
The WFMC proposal is fantastic but now is necessary to publish more than definitions, specifications and new releases or we can out a limb to see it drawn down to research intends only.
Sorry, english isn't my first language.
